How GetLead measures what AI sees — and what it's missing
When someone asks ChatGPT or Google AI for the best business in your category near them, AI systems synthesize dozens of signals to decide who gets cited. GetLead measures those exact signals for your business — and benchmarks them against your real local competitors.
What is GEO — primer for local operators — how GEO differs from classic SEO and what to fix first.
What we actually check
For every audit, we run a live fetch of your website — parsing schema markup, reading robots.txt, checking sitemap accessibility, and testing mobile performance via Google PageSpeed Insights. We cross-reference what your site says with what your Google Business Profile says. Inconsistencies between these two are among the top reasons AI assistants skip local businesses.
Signal mix
- Entity consistency— Your business name, address, and phone number must match exactly across your website, GBP, and key directories. A mismatch as small as "St." vs "Street" reduces citation confidence for AI systems.
- Structured data (Schema) — JSON-LD markup tells AI systems what your business is, what it offers, and where it operates. Missing or broken schema is the single most fixable visibility gap we find.
- Answer-shaped content— AI systems prefer short, direct, factual answers. Pages that lead with "We are a family-owned..." score lower than pages that open with specific service + location + differentiator.
- GBP freshness— Regular posts, recent reviews, and active Q&A signal to AI that your business is alive and serving customers. A GBP last updated six months ago is a red flag.
- AI panel mention rate — When live probing is enabled for your audit, we probe representative queries in your market and report how often your business is mentioned versus 3–5 competitors we track for you.
How to read your score
Your visibility score is a composite of live signals — not a search engine ranking. It reflects what AI systems can see and synthesize about your business today. Use it week over week and against your local competitor set. We don't manufacture guarantees about third-party AI products. What we do guarantee: the signals we measure are real, the competitor context is drawn from your actual market, and the fix list is ranked by estimated impact.
Data handling
V1 stores audit inputs and generated reports in our database for your dashboard. We only request OAuth scopes needed for done-for-you workflows, and we never sell your data.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers on GEO, AI citations, and what to fix first. GetLead is English-only across marketing and product surfaces.
- How can my local business show up in AI answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews)?
- You earn citations with a tight Google Business Profile, matching name-address-phone everywhere, clear service pages, valid JSON-LD, and factual copy assistants can quote. GetLead scores each piece and stacks you next to nearby competitors so you know what to fix first. Start with the highest-impact items in your report — usually NAP and schema before anything else.
- What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
- GEO is how you earn mentions in AI answers instead of losing them to the shop down the street. It focuses on citation-friendly signals — entity accuracy, schema, and short factual content — not keyword stuffing. GetLead automates the measurement so you spend time executing, not debating what “counts.”
- How is AI visibility different from traditional SEO?
- Classic SEO fights for blue links. AI visibility fights for mentions when someone asks a question in chat or an AI summary. You can own maps and still lose AI citations — GetLead surfaces that gap in one scorecard. Use both: SEO for traffic, GEO for how assistants describe you.
- What is llms.txt and why would I use it?
- llms.txt is a public file on your site that summarizes who you are and what you offer in a machine-readable format. It helps assistants grab accurate facts fast. It does not replace a strong site or GBP — it supports them once your basics are clean.
- Do Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT use the same signals?
- Each platform blends its own data and rules. The winning move is the same everywhere: lock your entity data, ship clean schema, and publish concise answers to real customer questions. That way every system that crawls you finds the same story.
- Can anyone guarantee placement in AI search results?
- No — and anyone who claims they can is selling you air. What you can do is measure your citation rate, close the gaps your competitors haven’t closed yet, and track improvement week over week. That’s exactly what GetLead is built for.
- How does GetLead measure AI visibility?
- We pull live signals from your website and Google Business Profile, benchmark you against real competitors in your market, and rank fixes by impact. When you connect API access, we run category queries and report how often you show up versus peers. Nothing is simulated — it’s your live data.
- What does the audit engine actually fetch from my website?
- Your homepage HTML, JSON-LD, robots.txt and sitemap paths, internal links, and mobile performance via PageSpeed Insights when a key is set. We also read DNS TXT for Search Console verification. You see fresh readings every time you run an audit.
- What should I fix first?
- Start with GBP accuracy and NAP consistency, then LocalBusiness schema, then short service pages with clear answers. Layer in reviews, posts, and llms.txt after the foundation is solid. Your report already orders items by impact for your market.
